Position Summary:

The successful candidate will be a seasoned R&D leader with a track record of developing and commercializing a diverse product portfolio in the Medical Devices industry. A broad understanding of current and emerging trends including new technologies, customer needs, and competitive dynamics is required. Experience in recruiting, developing and retaining R&D talent is essential. This hands-on leader will have experience collaborating and influencing cross-functionally with key stakeholders to build alignment on a global basis. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge and excellent leadership capabilities in order to foster a collaborative, entrepreneurial and highly productive R&D environment.

The Head of R&D, will be leading a multi-disciplinary organization, across various technical expertise, providing technical vision, leadership and expertise driving product and technology development to meet portfolio roadmap objectives.

This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Position Responsibilities:

Visualize and articulate the value of innovative product solutions and technology strategies for growth and drive development of new, innovative products from concept through regulatory approval and commercialization.

•Plan, develop and implement the R&D business strategy road map to create competitive advantage for the product portfolio.
•Ensure delivery of technology and product development cycles on-time, on budget and with high quality results to support the portfolio’s commercial success and customer adoption.
•Provide executive leadership and management for Projects, Scientist, and technology driving commercialization (customer and product requirements).
•Contribute to the development of the company’s strategy by managing the overall technology portfolio: approve Projects that enter portfolio, and ensure technology portfolio decisions are based on strong risk assessment and Business Analysis.
•Create a highly disciplined operating environment resulting in a highly efficient and customer focused model; tracks performance and delivery by maintaining an understanding of worldwide technology developments in R&D.
•Designs a performance management process to monitor projects and deliver results that exceed expectations.
•Plan and direct the organization’s activities to achieve stated/agreed targets and standards for financial, quality, commercialization, and operational performance.
•Re-align the existing budget/headcount against future strategic focus and priorities.
•Maintain and develop organizational culture, values and reputation in its markets and with all staff, customers, suppliers and partners.
•Develop and implement strategic business plans to provide for long-term business growth.
•Provide leadership through an entrepreneurial, visionary approach that promotes best practices, market-driven analysis of product technology strategy and customer focus.
•Work closely with key stake holders internally and externally to build a strong collaborative environment across different levels and areas of the business.
•Take true ownership of all aspects of the product R&D development and next generation technology, work diligently to ensure goals and objectives are met and exceeded.
•Recruit world-class talent to accomplish the product development initiatives now and to advance the company’s growth capability and operational efficiency to position it well for the future.
•Develop productive relationships with the company’s functional leaders and teams to leverage their expertise and ensure alignment on the company’s strategy and mission.
•Develop and implement internal product development and program management processes in order to meet product development timelines and deliver on commitments.
•Create a cogent R&D strategy that maps to current and long-term technology trends.
•Enhance R&D pipeline management, consisting of new and innovative products that enable Carestream to increase market share while remaining on the cutting edge of innovation and new product development.
•Strengthen the bench of talent and performance of the R&D team.
•Maintain understanding of worldwide technology developments in the Healthcare domain.
•Build a strong team. Identify the skill mix we need, drive hiring to fill gaps, aggressively develop our existing staff.

Required Skills & Education:

Fifteen-plus years of senior leadership experience in the research and development of commercially successful medical device products.

•Bachelors in relevant technical fields such as Physics, computer science, biomed, or radiology. Advanced degree – Masters or PhD desired.
•A good understanding of software development and Artificial Intelligence applications in Healthcare.
•Demonstrated experience in Project Management and Product development practices for large scale projects.
•Experience defining and managing an R&D budget and organization, and interacting with marketing, sales, manufacturing, quality and other functions.
•Experience developing and managing external relationships with key scientific leaders, customers, government regulators and other external stakeholders.
•Critical leadership capability - Acts to surpass goals, seizing opportunities to push the envelope. Sets to achieve continually higher goals that are ambitious but realistic for self and team, geared to organizational objectives.
•Focuses on new business opportunities that enable business development targets to be exceeded. A strategic forward looking thought leader.
•Collaborates and openly debates with the team to manage projects, solve problems, discuss challenging issues, or learn more about critical issues as a group.
•Domain expertise in Healthcare industry. Sound understanding of medical device regulatory requirements for Class II and III medical devices is strongly preferred.
•Builds R&D leadership bench strength, Attracts, engages, develops, and retains top talent at all levels of the organization
•Builds a great team and great culture that is diverse, collaborative, inclusive with trust and healthy debates
•Inspires, influences, and empowers employees across the matrix (both direct and indirect teams globally) to overachieve objectives
•Decisive leader with ability to lead and empower teams to develop impactful short and long-term strategies and action plans and drive for results
•Proven experience in global leadership in a distributed workforce environment.
•Good balance of technology expertise and relevant business acumen.
